OSTUNI
Painted with lime every year, Ostuni is known as "the white town".
A skein of snow-white alleys, stairways, pathways, balconies and flowers wind around the cathedral in an enchantment of light.
Situated in the coastal Murgia on the top of a hill, Ostuni probably rose on a site of ancient Neolithic settlements subsequently peopled by the Messapi, as the material found in Contrada Lardagnano and in Sant'Angelo's cave shows.
The historic centre of Ostuni, called "la terra", is a real gem which has an irresistible charm due to the picturesque identity of its town planning and to the blinding monochrome colour of its built up, rigorously white painted. |
